Motor Vehicle Design, Motor Vehicle Assembly, Automotive Parts, Motors and Generators, and Automotive and Electrical Components

Goal: To build greater breadth and depth in Central Ohio within these industries to further establish the region as a premiere destination for auto manufacturers, suppliers, and research facilities.

The motor vehicle parts industry has flourished in Ohio for many reasons, the most prevalent of which is the state's proximity to the Detroit headquarters of the traditional Big Three, or "old domestics," original equipment manufacturers (OEM's). In addition, the early development of industries associated with the motor vehicleindustry within Ohio cemented the strong network of associated activities in Ohio today.

A thorough analysis of the motor vehicle parts manufacturing industry suggests specific ways in which the region can support this industry. Some goals of the Automotive Cluster include: Positioning Ohio as an attractive business environment for OEM retention and expansion; providing opportunities for just-in-time delivery; R&D built around facility changes in model design and production processes; and nurturing and facilitate innovation designed to support and enhance the industry. Accomplishing these goals results in a high quality business environment which embraces innovation and increases competitiveness within the marketplace.

The Automotive Cluster Committee has identified four paths to competitiveness within the region to achieve the stated goals.
  • Understanding the competitive position of Ohio's automotive cluster; the economic environment
  • Measuring and improving the competitiveness of the supply chain
  • Developing global thought leadership in manufacturing
  • Transferring knowledge to improve performance

Working collaboratively with the private sector, government, and educational facilities; working groups are being developed to address each of these important initiatives, gain further knowledge, and create a business environment which is highly attractive to motor vehicle OEMs and the organizations which support and supply them.
